As most of you will know, Grease the movie was John Travolta’s big break in showbusiness, catapulting him from minor celebrity to superstar almost overnight. Travolta was expertly cast as Tony Manero, a 19 year old Brooklyn paint store clerk. Ironically he hates his life in dead end day job and transforms himself from lowly street kid to disco king at the weekends in the Odessy discotheque with his partner Stephanie.

Travolta and Saturday Night Fever had a massive influence in the meteoric rise of the 70s disco culture, along with the Bee Gees outstanding accompanying soundtrack to the movie.

Here’s a quick overview of the classic movie:

The Matcho nineteen year old Brooklyn born Tony Manero(aka John Travolta) lives for nothing but his Saturday nights, especially at the down town disco Odyssey, where he is the dance king of the club, mainly down to his flambouyant and stylish moves on the dance floor. However, in his personal life, things don’t look so good. Back home, Tony argues constantly with his dad and needs to constantly compete with the family’s rose tinted view of his elder brother who is a catholic priest. He can no longer find satisfaction at his day job which he despises at a local decorators store. However, his life begins to change for the better when he sees Stephanie, dancing in the disco and begins working with her for the club’s annual disco dance competition. Stephanie has big dreams of the glamorous world beyond Brooklyn, and her ideas to move on to the big city just over the bridge immediately change Tony’s life forever. The iconic Saturday Night Fever costume lives forever!
